Kingdoms & Cities

Tidefall has one king, but power is divided. Highwater’s nobles argue over the kingdom’s future, Sarnath commands its strongest army, and Veloria’s merchant lords compete for the wealth left behind by the Storm.

The Highwater Kingdom

King Aleron II rules from Castle Tidefall, where powerful lords gather to settle the kingdom’s affairs. Their families command its soldiers, own its farmland and control its trade. Each recognises the Crown, though their willingness to follow its orders varies.

Aleron inherited the throne as an infant after his father and grandfather disappeared fighting Goruks. The Grand Council governed in his place, giving ambitious nobles decades to strengthen their own positions. Now grown, the king must negotiate with people accustomed to ruling without him.

The Storm has left the kingdom with fewer resources and growing trouble on its borders. Sarnath’s army and Veloria’s wealth give the Quince brothers considerable influence at court. Royal business draws petitioners, merchants and provincial representatives to Highwater, where winning a powerful patron can be worth more than securing the king’s approval.

Sarnath & the Black Keep

Darion Quince’s soldiers guard the roads, collect the taxes and decide who passes through the gates of the Southern Provinces. From the Black Keep, he commands Tidefall’s only standing professional army. Its regular pay, standard equipment and strict discipline allow Sarnath to keep forces in the field while other lords must summon their followers.

The Iron Ring forts carry that authority across the south. Their protection keeps trade moving, but the garrisons demand food, money and obedience from the communities around them. Complaints offer little relief when the soldiers collecting a levy also enforce the law.

In Sarnath itself, inspectors of the Court of Mercy pursue matters that attract the Black Keep’s attention. Their arrival is feared even by people with nothing to hide.

The lockdown has weakened Quince’s hold beyond the city. Forts have fallen, supplies are delayed and outlying commanders are increasingly left to themselves. Travellers may encounter disciplined protectors, frightened garrisons or soldiers openly abusing the authority of Sarnath’s banner.

Veloria & the Merchant Lords

Veloria grew wealthy on overseas trade. Now its ships are trapped in the harbour, and the families that once competed for distant markets fight over farmland, workshops and business within Tidefall. Merchant cartels and gangs control much of the crowded port, while wealthy patrons continue to fund theatres, galleries and lavish public events.

Eramos Quince moves comfortably among them. A merchant leader, public official and generous benefactor, he sponsors the arts and holds considerable influence at the University. His support opens doors across the city.

Scholars seek funding, merchants seek protection, and ambitious officials seek the backing of people who can pay for both. Business brings them together at public celebrations and private gatherings. Veloria still offers opportunity, particularly to those who can make themselves useful to its powerful families.
