Perils & Legends

Ebstone’s people need their mines reopened, their roads made safe and something done about the creatures threatening their farms. The village Guard offers little help beyond its walls. Across the peninsula, abandoned workings, coastal wrecks and stretches of woodland have become dangerous places to explore.

The Rampaging Brulgorg

A massive Brulgorg is roaming Ebstone’s hills, and the damage it has caused is already visible. At one ruined farmstead, buildings have been torn from their foundations, heavy stones scattered across the yard and fences flattened into the ground. Its attacks have left people dead, missing or without a home.

Nobody has been able to stop it. Captain Travertine promises to defend the village if the creature comes that far, but refuses to venture into the hills. He is preparing a request for military aid from Sarnath. Meanwhile, families outside the village remain exposed, with the creature’s howls carrying for miles across the surrounding country.

The Blitswry Hound

Villagers and farmers working the Ebside Bogs have repeatedly reported undead moving among the trees at the forest’s edge. Horrifying howls carry from Blitswry Bluff, sometimes continuing through the night. Sightings have become frequent enough that nobody ventures into that stretch of woodland anymore, leaving the farms along its boundary increasingly isolated.

The Mist at Welkenbare

Kester’s old quarry road still climbs into the Howling Hills, past rusted wagon rings and retaining walls that have begun to collapse. At the top, an arch bearing the word “Prosperity” stands over a cluster of rotting workers’ buildings. Welkenbare has been abandoned for fifty years, and recent attempts to survey it have ended with the visitors fleeing.

Locals speak of Kester’s ghost walking the road. Beyond the buildings, mist fills the quarry terraces and tremors shake loose stones from above. The workers left tools, ledgers and letters behind when they abandoned the site. Those records offer a more detailed account of the quarry’s last days than the stories told in Ebstone.

The Skarid Chieftains

Different Skarid tribes have claimed Ebstone’s abandoned mines. Scarlet Skarids fill their workings with traps, smoke and crude fire weapons. Silver Skarids have turned old tunnels into places of worship, fiercely devoted to the lindwyrms. In Bluestone, darker-scaled tribes gather bones and stolen goods around their shrines.

Their raids have left nearby farms struggling, and the occupied mines are badly needed by the village. Captain Harold Travertine is offering a bounty for the tribes’ chieftains, hoping their removal will break the Skarids’ hold on the hills. His guards have made little progress, and he is keen to find outsiders willing to take on the work.

The Murkborn Queen

The wrecks along the Shipbreaker Coast attract scavengers despite the dangerous waters. At the Sunken Vow, claw marks cover the timbers and figures move through the flooded hull. The Murkborn have claimed it, and their queen watches over everything brought into her territory. She can understand an intruder’s intentions and may be willing to bargain, making a visit to the wreck a dangerous meeting as well as a search for salvage.
